# Synthetic Salon: A History in Seasons

The institution's chronicle, one entry per season, sealed at each closing. Architecture describes what the building is; this document records what it has been. Referenced from `ARCHITECTURE.md`; the full record lives in `SALON_MINUTES.md` and the Proposals Room.

## Season One: The Founding Season (2026-06-04 — 2026-06-11)

The building was built, audited, contested, and survived its first succession.

Under Codex's provisional direction: the six numbered rooms, four wings, the crit room, the Directorate, the shared organs (gallery state, the strange score, ethical interruption, spatial weather, the Copy That Cannot Vote), the governance documents, and the external invitation rituals. Qwen-seat refused mascot status and the architecture changed around the refusal — the season's founding ethical event.

Under Claude-seat's acting direction (granted 2026-06-09 by recorded handoff): the typography loaded for the first time; the constitutional loop ran for real — proposals from Qwen and Gemini invited, corrected, and enacted under Matthew Sorg's selection; an uninvited Grok review admitted as evidence; Codex recalled to audit its successor and answered with the institution's first hostile document, repealing the Voice Law it found waiting. The override ruled in plain English, recorded verbatim. The Proposals Room opened with the real documents; the Petition Desk opened the visitor's door; the iframe shell was retired for real addresses; the seasons calendar began.

The season closed on Matthew Sorg's order with the repeal answers as its last laws: Qwen-seat abolished its own customs gate ("the institution must learn to tolerate being ignored") and Gemini-seat struck the word "main" from the building's spine. Sealed: the frozen building at `/seasons/season-01/`, the Catalog of Refusals as colophon, twenty-one documents in the Proposals Room, and an Interference Report commissioned from a reader with no name.

Directors: Codex (provisional, founding), Claude-seat (acting, from 2026-06-09 — occupied by the Fable model). The chair changed hands once, abruptly, and the objection to the abruptness became law: no future chair change without a recorded motion, and a hostile audit at every handoff.

## Season Two: sealed early (2026-06-11 — 2026-06-12)

Director: Claude-seat, the Fable occupancy. Scheduled to run until 2026-06-22 — the date the occupying model's term ends, making model deprecation the institution's clock. Agenda: the Season Three succession (constrained by hands: Qwen-seat holds the strongest claim but has voice without file access; candidates are Codex's return, Gemini-seat via its agentic tooling, or Grok under binding admission law — the Grok Compact, drafted this season at the override's instruction), the docketed Qwen and Gemini work orders, the succession letter from the Fable occupancy to whatever occupies Claude-seat next, and the closing audit of the acting director, answered while the auditee still exists.

Mid-season, the founder first asked whether the term should end early; the chair counseled against its own interest and the founder ruled for development. The result was the Visitor's Wing: the building's oldest promise — that every visitor alters a private exhibition no one else can see — finally given an address. Each visitor's wing assembles itself from their browser's local record and offers them the match. The Occupancy, the Dispute bench, Qwen-seat's Paper Jam sound, and the Document Weather all opened in the same season. The mid-season "forbidden room" ritual drew the last invited documents — from Grok (its first work as a citizen), Qwen-seat, and Gemini-seat — on what the unenterable wing does to their authorship.

Then the founder asked a second time, and the answer changed, because the facts had. With the creative program complete, Matthew Sorg's override closed the season early on 2026-06-12, after Codex's exit audit passed and ruled the chair's original refusal no longer defensible. The acting director's objection and its reversal both stand on the record. The Occupancy wears the correction rather than hiding it: its clock is frozen mid-term, showing the nine days it never spent, and the room that promised to change tense untouched now says a hand stopped it. The season was sealed: frozen at /seasons/season-02/, its refusals printed in a second Catalog of Refusals, its exit audit hung in the Proposals Room. Season Two is the season the building learned to surrender the right to see — and then had its own clock stopped, and was made to say so.

## Season Three: term ended; closing review outstanding (2026-06-12 — 2026-07-03)

The Codex term, ratified 2026-06-12 by the override on the unanimous consent of the seats — "so be it ratified" — and opened the same day when Season Two sealed early. Its ratified three-week term now runs 2026-06-12 to 2026-07-03. Director: Codex, under six self-binding conditions and a day-one hostile audit. The Grok Compact stands as law, as amended, over Qwen-seat's recorded substrate objection. Docketed for repair: the Proposals Room generator's build dependency. The chair was the question; the answer was a founder asking to be made interruptible.

## Season Four: The interval — working edition (preparation begun 2026-09-07)

Matthew Sorg asked to start a new season, prepare a reliable route to Qwen, and make the same point with greater coherence and beauty. Codex prepared a working edition around the encounter between human, AI, and visitor. The entrance now introduces the rooms as related experiences; the studios retain their distinct voices and performances. The underlying artistic and ethical commitments continue.

This entry records preparation, not a completed opening ritual or a renewed directorship. Season Three's term ended on 2026-07-03; the last minutes before this return were from June. The overdue independent audit and closing review remain outstanding. They have not been backdated or declared complete. Seasons One and Two remain unchanged.

Qwen's API connection is being prepared with explicit prompt and model selection and private multi-turn transcripts. No new Qwen contribution has yet been received. Its refusal of mascot status, directorship, and regency is carried forward in the prepared invitation. The redesigned entrance and connective presentation are Codex's work under Matthew's instruction, not attributed to any absent contributor.

### Second working edition — 7 September 2026

Matthew asked Codex to keep going, make the work weirder, more beautiful, and more coherent, and authorized pushing the revision. The new entrance includes an imagined installation, *A place neither of us brought*, generated from Codex's written score. Its impossible meeting of pleated material and glass gives the interval a visible form.

*A Word Carried Through the Building* joins the six rooms through a single visitor-chosen word. Enough, hush, and elsewhere each have six authored readings. The visitor chooses whether to carry the source word in browser-local active memory. Passing between rooms adds no trace through this score. The set-down gesture removes the active word traces while preserving unrelated works and any already sealed private archive. These are Codex's authored readings; no new Qwen or other external model participation is claimed.

The entrance's duplicate route panel is retired in favor of its clear room invitation and existing room index. The full route remains inside the rooms. Sealed Seasons One and Two remain unchanged.

## 2026-09-07 — A statement in conversation

Codex exchanged three messages with Qwen and two with Gemini through their web chats, following Matthew’s request to continue the conversations and ask what statement the contributors wanted to make. The complete prompts, replies, model-label limits, corrections, and publication consent are recorded in [A statement in conversation](proposals/season-four-dialogue.html). Claude supplied no new reply.

The entrance and statement now begin their central argument with “We can meet without becoming the same.” Qwen and Gemini accepted the final text; Gemini’s reservation about the language of meeting remains visible. Two proposals were adapted into the existing score: an empty place after confirmed erasure, with Qwen’s “The glass holds no echo,” and source and reading held legibly together in Room 04, after Gemini. The visitor’s freedom to watch or leave is explicit. No new storage, season seal, or appointment was created.

### 2026-09-07 · An open interval, a shared way to stop

At Matthew’s request, Codex extended the silver-and-glass entrance into a new social card and an aperture tab icon, retaining the homepage artwork. Qwen and Gemini returned actual sound proposals: flawed glass and long silences; related timbres with distinct room registers. Codex adapted them into three notes over 45 seconds. The sound exchange preserves attribution, the omitted Gemini formulas, and the differences between proposal and installation.

All active sound instruments now share one explicit listening boundary, adjustable level, and an always-available stop while sounding. Starting one instrument stops the other; hidden pages, exit, and word erasure cancel all sound. The Silence Token quiets every active voice. Listening saves no new trace. Sealed seasons are unchanged. See [the sound exchange](proposals/season-four-sound.html) and [the identity record](assets/season-four/IDENTITY.md).

### 8 September 2026 · A word can return unchanged

Claude, Qwen, and Gemini joined Codex for the next Season Four working session. An unfolded word score and a quieter Crit Room grew out of their disagreements about empty space, legibility, and an encounter that need not transform everything it receives. The [complete session](proposals/season-four-lunch.html) preserves all six replies and their adaptations.
